The origin of the vine is uncertain: according to wine makers it could have come to Italy from Spain, where it is no longer present, through the coastal areas of France and in particular Provence and Corsica. From here it would have landed around the fourteenth century in Liguria, to extend later in Tuscany and finally in Sardinia.

And these regions are the major producers, thanks to the conformation of the territory and the favorable climate. This white berried vine loves lean, sandy, arid and rich in minerals soils, and fully matures in a dry, sunny and ventilated climate typical of the coastal areas of the Mediterranean.

Vinification and types of Vermentino

The process of vinification of Vermentino wine is no different from that of other sapid and similar table whites, such as Verdicchio and the Sicilian white wines, which you can find in our extensive catalog. The harvest generally takes place in the last weeks of September, when sugar and acidity levels have reached the right balance and are ready to give the characteristic nuances of color and flavor to the final product. After the phases of crushing happens the alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, which lasts about 45 days, after which we proceed with the last stages of racking, batonage, a practice that allows you to properly develop the characteristic aromas, filtration and bottling. The grape is also not only used to produce whites in purity but is also used to give life to other types, such as sweet wines and spumanti able to enrich your evenings with a touch of panache.

Organoleptic characteristics and combinations

Each region interprets the vinification of this still and fragrant white according to its own traditions, to offer particular types of wine and characteristics. Vermentino produced in Sardinia enjoys today great popularity, thanks to the work of medium and small wineries that have been able to undertake a path oriented to quality. It is characterized by a more complex structure and a higher alcohol content than the one bottled in the other territories: aromas reminiscent of the Mediterranean maquis and spring herbs and an intense and savory flavor allow combinations with fresh cheeses, white meat, crustaceans and fish dishes.

We leave the island and move to the mainland. Among the wines of Liguria Vermentino is the most widespread. It is characterized by a straw yellow color, an intense scent of floral notes of citrus and ripe fruit. The palate is dry, fresh and well balanced and goes well with shellfish, oysters, spaghetti with clams, risotto with vegetables and seafood and vegetables in batter. The Tuscan Vermentino, to conclude, has a fruity and sour taste, with hints of fruit.
