The "Mille e una Notte" DOC by Donnafugata winery with its black color, which inspired the name, also contains an important story, told in its label, that binds the double knot winery Donnafugata that for decades operates in the western area of the hills of Marsala in Sicily. The illustrated palace on the label is the one where Queen Maria Carolina escaped from Naples and was the favorite house of the writer Tomasi di Lampedusa in Santa Margherita Belice. It is produced with the vinification of Nero d'Avola grapes to which are added in the blend other types of red grapes, strictly cultivated in the soils called Contessa Entellina, dictated by the DOP disciplinary. The grapes are reared using the espalier system and the pruning used is that of the spurred cordon. The overall production is generally low as they reach 40 quintals per hectare of vine. The vinification involves the use of grapes, harvested in September, vinified in steel barrels, with maceration on the skins for about 12 days. The temperature is free and uncontrolled and varies depending on the degree of fermentation from 26-30°C. Malolactic fermentation is expected which is carried out naturally, the wine then passes into French oak barrels where it remains for at least 15 months. The final aging takes place in bottle for at least 24 months.
"Mille e una Notte" DOC's features
The Mille e una Notte by Donnafugata winery is a noble wine of Nero d'Avola, with an impenetrable ruby red color. Wine that shows great structure to the taste and remarkable personality, this red wine of great value, structured and complex, is a very refined and elegant wine, vinous, floral and spicy, recalls with its pronounced notes the red fruits of the Sicilian land. Alcohol blends into the soft tannins in a convincing balance. At the olfactory level it is enveloping with fruity, sweet and ripe hints, balsamic and floral notes of violet with a slight tobacco accent in the finish. The taste-olfactory response is long and perfect.
Serving suggestions by tasting this fine red wine from Cantina Donnafugata
It should be paired with elaborate dishes of red meat, pork, lamb. Excellent also in combination with the chops of mutton breaded with thyme or with the shoulder of veal baked with potatoes and spring onions. It should preferably be served in ample glasses, and a medium-long decantation is necessary, lasting at least 2 hours. The service must be at a temperature of 18ºC.
