The red wine DOC Nèstri produced by the prestigious Meroi winery founded in 1920, is made with the grapes coming from the east hills of Friuli in the Buttrio hamlet in the Udine province. The blend is made by 80% Merlot grapes and 20% of Cabernet Franc. The grapes are cultivated at 140 meters above the sea level on marl soils which keep the water. It is cultivated with the Guyot method and the grape harvest takes place in the first week of October and ends at the third week. The wine making process starts in stainless steel tanks and then it ferments in barrels under temperature control for 15-20 days. There are selected yeasts to achieve naturally the malolactic fermentation. The refinement takes place for 16 months in barrels which give structure and body to the wine and further 4 months in bottle. There is no filtering.
Characteristics of this red wine from Friuli Venezia Giulia
It has an intense and deep ruby red color. The smell has dog rose, violet, cherry, blueberry and wild strawberry aromas. It ends with white pepper and cinnamon aromas. The taste is thick, with fruity aromas, tannic and lightly fresh. The end is pulpy and persistent.
Suggested pairings while tasting this red wine
It is perfect with the local food such as the quail with capers, onion and beans and tripe in humid. It must be opened one hour before the use and it must be served at 16-18°C in a Ballon wine glass.
