The Masseto wine of Ornellaia , is produced from the grape variety Merlot most prized of the entire company. 100% purity for the wine of dreams. The bunches, harvested by hand in 15 kg crates, were always and only selected by hand on a double sorting table before and after destemming and then subjected to a soft pressing. Six different lots were vinified separately. Fermentation took place in both steel and wooden tanks, followed by a maceration of 15 - 20 days at a temperature between 25 and 30 °C. Malolactic fermentation then took place in 100% new oak barrels, keeping the different lots separate for the first 12 months of maturation. The wine was then assembled and reintroduced into the barrels for another year, for a total of 24 months. The refinement then continues in the bottle for 12 months before being released onto the market. Masseto, known as the King of Italian red wines. It is “Masseto”, the son of the Tuscan hill of the same name where there was once a swamp, and where today Merlot vines grow on soils with unique characteristics, in a particularly favorable microclimate. To this we add the great quality of the super cellars - such as Tenuta dell'Ornellaia - capable of presenting, in a sort of ideal continuity, the same profile in the different vintages, while at the same time emphasizing the best peculiarities of the vintage. And so here is “Masseto”, the fruit of a vintage that already promises to be of the highest level, with great drinkability even when young. Manual harvest, selection of the bunches on a double sorting table (before and after destemming), fermentation in both steel and wood, then two years of rest in barrique. Nothing else to add: we are talking about the best Italian Merlot. Because when the King shows off his crown, then really, there is no one left to beat.
Characteristics of Masseto wine
On organoleptic examination this sensational wine from Tuscany It presents itself as a beautiful ruby red, intense and dark. The perfume on the nose offers a refined olfactory bouquet, in which fruity and ripe tones of blueberries, blackberries and berries meet, which join delicate notes of vanilla and cocoa, spices and dark chocolate, tobacco and black truffle. On the palate it is substantial and rich, of great density, guided by a smooth, polished and silky tannic quality. The fruits perceived by the nose also return to the palate, and give a fresh, elegant and interminable persistence finish.
Recommended pairings with this great Tuscan red wine
An ideal wine to pair with game and venison dishes, it is wonderful with juniper-flavoured venison leg, but like all great wines, it is also wonderful to sip on its own. It should be served at 18° C in a large glass that allows the wine to oxygenate so as to encourage the sensory notes to be released and invade the nose of the taster.
