Wines of the Maremma Tuscany

Maremma wines are produced from red and white berry vines grown on mainly flat land that are located on the coastal strip of the Province of Grosseto. This territory with great hydrographic and meteorological qualities gives rise to a great variety of DOC wines, particularly appreciated for their elegance and pleasantness.

Origins and history

Maremma has been known since Etruscan times for its high quality labels, now appreciated all over the world for their organoleptic characteristics and unmistakable structure. There are numerous testimonies of the wine production of this area of Tuscany, since ancient times: several pottery and furnaces necessary for the production of wine amphorae have been found in the hilly regions of Manciano and Scansano.

The local populations have always lived with the vines, which easily grow on these fertile and sunny soils. In the Middle Ages the Benedictine monks also actively participated in the maintenance of the vine culture in this part of Tuscany. This is how the customs and traditions linked to the production of Maremma wines have been consolidated, which, handed down until modern times, have given rise to the great red tuscan wines, appreciated and recognized worldwide. Thanks to the attribution of the Denomination of Controlled Origin by Ministerial Decree 30/2011, Maremma wines have conquered the historical homogeneity and identity that has allowed to protect the production and distribution of labels in this region.

Characteristics and Combinations

The native vines used for the production of Maremma wines, used alone or in blend with 60% complementary grapes, are Merlot, Syrah, Ciliegiolo, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese. For the production can also be used black grapes from other typical vines of Tuscany to 40%.

Among the red wines that maremmano fascinates for its ruby hues of great visual impact while the rosé conquers for its brilliant color both in the bottle and in the glass. The aromas are fruity and fresh, very elegant and structured. The palate is dry, harmonious and soft while the taste is round and enveloping.

The organoleptic properties of quality allow succulent combinations with grilled meat, game, cold cuts, mature and blue cheeses and in general with the traditional dishes of Tuscan cuisine.
